Buying software through a reseller vs. direct: does it matter?
Most field service software is sold directly by the vendor. A few sell exclusively through resellers instead. Here's what that structural difference actually changes for you as a buyer.
Most of the software you’ll compare in this category is sold the same way: you talk to the vendor’s own sales team, get a quote, and sign directly with them. A smaller number of platforms work differently, selling exclusively through a network of authorized resellers instead. It’s easy to miss this distinction, but it changes more about the buying process than most people expect.
What “reseller-only” actually means
Geotab is the clearest example we’ve researched. It doesn’t sell direct and doesn’t publish a rate card. Every quote comes from an authorized reseller, and while the underlying software is the same everywhere, the price, the support relationship, and how much room there is to negotiate can genuinely vary depending on which reseller you end up working with.
The upside of buying through a reseller
More room to shop around. If a direct-sales vendor gives you one number and one sales rep, a reseller model means you can request quotes from more than one partner and compare them, the same way you’d shop for insurance or a car. Some resellers also bundle in local support or services a direct vendor wouldn’t offer.
The downside
More legwork, and less consistency. You can’t fully trust a single online estimate or a friend’s quote from a different reseller, since your actual number depends on who you’re talking to. It also means the support relationship isn’t uniform. If your reseller is great, that’s a real advantage. If they’re mediocre, switching resellers for the same software isn’t always simple.
What to ask before you commit
If a platform you’re considering is reseller-only, ask how many authorized resellers exist in your region, and get at least two quotes before assuming the first number you hear is representative. Also ask directly what happens if you’re unhappy with your specific reseller’s support. Some vendors let you switch resellers without switching software; others don’t make that easy.
